Surfing
This is a new project for the 2009/2010 4H Year.
About this group:
The surfing group will start regular meetings in June 2010. My goal is to expose children to all inherent dangers associated with surfing and the best methods of avoiding injury. We will revieaw and reinforce the proper surf etiquette for the benefit of all who enjoy this activity. A foam surfboard is recommended for all children just starting out. A 4.3 mill wetsuit is recommended for winter months and a 3.2 for early summer. Wet shirts are recommended even during summer months for rash protection as well as protection from the sun.
Caution! This activity is addicting, once your child has reached a level of proficiency that allows him or her to glide down the face of a wave they will be hooked for life.
Any Requirements to Participate?:
Wetsuit, rash guard, sunscreen, towel etc…
This activity requires all children to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
I would like to recommend Encinitas Surf Shop for all your surfing needs.
A foam surfboard of appropriate size for the child, six inches taller than them is a good general rule, I.N.T. is a good brand.
Additional Information:
Parking Pass: We typically surf Encinitas area from Swamis down to Seaside, occasionally La Jolla shores if it is windy and blown out up north. La Jolla is free parking most of the others spots we frequent are pay parking. An annual state parking pass in $75.00 or you can pay ten bucks per day. You can park free on public streets at most locations if you do not mind the walk.
Surfboard: I would recommend a foam board to start with, I.N.T. is a real good brand. If you don't want to spend $200.00 on a new board Craig's List is an excellent place to find used boards very inexpensive. For the kids I would recommend something under six foot, the eight footers from price club are too big. If you can not afford a board I have a few we can pass around.
Wet suit: We like O'Neal or Billabong 4.3 mm for winter 3.2 for between times, these run around $130.00
